Children with Drug Dependency Issues

Children with Drug Dependency Issues

One of the more emotionally difficult parts of Will planning is making accommodations for a child who is struggling with drug dependency. There may be fear that giving them too much money form an inheritance may lead to increased drug or alcohol abuse. However, you may want to give them something from your Estate or feel guilty for excluding them altogether.

One option is to create a trust, where you give an Estate Trustee the control to govern how much of the trust is given at any time. Another option is to create a strict trust that limits a certain amount of money to be distributed every year. This would relieve the Estate Trustee of potential conflict with the beneficiary constantly asking for more money.

There are other options available to you to make sure that you are able to gift something to your child without exposing them to risk of self-harm.

Our firm has helped many clients with similar issues, and we would be happy to help you.
